What Is Mario Andretti's Net Worth?

Mario Andretti is an American race car driver with a substantial net worth of $130 million. He is renowned for being one of only two drivers to win races in Formula One, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR, becoming a symbol of speed in American culture.

Early Life

Born Mario Gabriele Andretti on February 28, 1940, in Motovun, Croatia, Mario identifies as an Italian-born American. From a young age, both he and his twin brother Aldo exhibited a keen interest in cars, pretending to drive even before seeing a real car. After moving to a location with a nearby racetrack, Mario began his journey in real racing, quickly proving himself a talent to be watched.

Racing Career

Mario and his family emigrated to the United States, settling in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, with only $125. Despite an initial plan to become a welder, Mario, under a falsified driver's license, entered his first amateur race. The twins worked on a 1948 Hudson at Nazareth Speedway. Both Mario and Aldo won two races each in their first four races, although Aldo was seriously injured toward the end of the season. Mario's career quickly soared with 21 modified stock car wins in just 46 races from 1960 to 1961.

Mario enjoyed an unprecedentedly long career, being named United States Driver of the Year in three different decades. He is one of only three drivers to win on paved ovals, road courses, and dirt tracks in the same season, accomplishing this feat four times. His final IndyCar win in April 1993 made him the first driver to win in four different decades, and he remains the first to win races across five decades.

Throughout his career, Mario won championships in NASCAR, Formula One, and more, participating in the Le Mans 24-Hour Race across four decades. Post-retirement, Mario's profile remained high with a column on race car driving and cameos in TV shows like "Home Improvement" and films like Pixar's "Cars" and "Dust to Glory."

He remains the only driver to win the Indianapolis 500 (1969), Daytona 500 (1967), and the Formula One World Championship (1978). Alongside Juan Pablo Montoya, Mario is the sole driver with wins in both the NASCAR Cup Series and Formula One, also securing an Indianapolis 500 win. His 109 career wins occurred on major circuits, with no other American finishing first in a Formula One race since his 1978 Dutch Grand Prix win.

Personal Life

Post-retirement, Mario remains active with speaking engagements, representing his longtime sponsors, and serving as spokesman for the now-defunct Champ Car World Series. He is vice chairman of the Andretti Winery in Napa Valley and owns gas stations, a Toyota dealership, car washes, and go-kart tracks. Since 2012, he has been the official ambassador for the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), promoting Formula 1 racing awareness.
