Early Life
Colby Ray Covington was born on February 22, 1988, in Clovis, California, to Noelle and Brad Covington. With two sisters, Candace and Callie, Colby was raised in a family with a wrestling background, as his father wrestled at the Southern Oregon University and the Oregon Institute of Technology. The family relocated to Oregon when Colby was eight. At Thurston High School in Springfield, Covington's wrestling talent became evident when he won the 171 lb state championship in his senior year. His journey took him to Iowa Central Community College, where he clinched the 165 lb national junior college wrestling title with an impeccable 34–0 record.
Colby then transferred to the University of Iowa, where a year-long suspension from the wrestling team followed a DUI and eluding police charge in August 2007. Reflecting on the incident, Colby considered it a low point in his life. He later moved to Oregon State University, earning All-American honors and securing the fifth position in the NCAA tournament during his senior year. Covington’s wrestling successes continued as he won the Pac-10 Conference twice and graduated in 2011 with a sociology degree. In 2013, he won a gold medal at the FILA Grappling no-gi world championships.

After defeating dos Anjos, he earned the title of Interim UFC Welterweight Champion. However, surgery prevented him from fighting Tyron Woodley at UFC 228, resulting in a bout between Woodley and Darren Till.
In August 2019, Covington triumphed over Robbie Lawler in UFC on ESPN 5, setting a record for most strikes thrown in a UFC match at 541.
