Toya Johnson was born Antonia Johnson on October 26, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is the daughter of Walter Andrews and Anita Johnson and grew up as the second child in a family of six siblings. Her childhood was challenging due to her mother's drug addiction, resulting in her being bounced between relatives. Tragedy struck in July 2016 when her brothers Rudy and Josh were shot and killed in New Orleans. In a significant turn of events in 2019, Antoine Edwards received a life sentence for the murders.

From 2009 to 2010, Johnson co-starred on the BET reality series "Tiny and Toya" alongside her best friend Tameka "Tiny" Harris, a member of the girl group Xscape and wife of rapper T.I.. The series debut was a massive success, registering the highest-rated premiere in BET's history with three million viewers.

In 2011, Johnson headlined another BET reality series titled "Toya: A Family Affair." This show highlighted her journey as a single mother striving to build her career while handling family issues such as her mother's addiction and her brother Walter's release from prison. From 2017 to 2018, Toya was featured on the WE tv reality series "Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta." Alongside her television career, Toya ventured into the business world by opening the New Orleans boutique G.A.R.B. in 2010, followed by GARB Shoetique in Smyrna, Georgia, in 2012.

At the age of 14, Toya met future Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne at a New Orleans corner store. Their relationship led to the birth of their daughter, Reginae, when Toya was 15 and Lil Wayne was 16. Lil Wayne, who was with Cash Money Records at the time, chose to focus on his rap career to support their daughter, born on November 29, 1998. The couple married on February 14, 2004, but divorced less than two years later. Johnson cited Lil Wayne's frequent absences and infidelity as the primary reasons for their split.

Toya's second marriage was to music executive Memphitz Wright on June 18, 2011. However, they separated after four years, finalizing their divorce in June 2016. On February 8, 2018, Toya welcomed her daughter Reign with Robert "Red" Rushing, and the couple tied the knot on October 15, 2022.
