Timothy Alan Dick, born on June 13, 1953, in Denver, Colorado, was raised alongside five siblings. After his father, a real estate agent, died in a car accident, his mother remarried, and they moved to Michigan with her new husband and his three children, making a family of nine.

In high school, Allen became involved in theater and learned to play the piano. He attended Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University, graduating in 1976 with a degree in communications. He was heavily involved with the college's student radio station.

Career

Allen's comedy career started in 1975 when friends dared him to perform stand-up at a Detroit club. He became successful, appearing in cable comedy shows and TV ads. However, in 1978, he was arrested for drug trafficking. He cooperated with authorities, leading to a reduced sentence of over two years in prison.

After his release, he returned to comedy, performing at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles and making talk show appearances.
