Early Life
Born Maria Elena Bello on April 18, 1967, in Norristown, Pennsylvania, she is the second of four children to Kathleen, a school nurse, and Joseph Bello, Sr., a contractor. Of Polish and Italian descent, Bello was raised in a working-class, Catholic family. She attended Archbishop John Carroll High School and graduated in 1985. She then majored in political science at Villanova University, opting for an acting career after a pivotal class during her senior year. She graduated in 1989.
Career
After college, Bello moved to New York City to study acting and appeared in several Off-Broadway productions before heading to Los Angeles to pursue television and film roles. In 1996, she was cast in the short-lived Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Her significant TV role came as Dr. Anna Del Amico in ER, garnering critical acclaim.
Her film career took off with roles in Permanent Midnight (1998), Payback (1999), and Coyote Ugly (2000). Bello's extensive film credits include The Cooler, A History of Violence, Thank You for Smoking, World Trade Center, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. She has been nominated twice for Golden Globe awards, for her roles in The Cooler and A History of Violence.
