Block earned his fortune as a co-founder of DC Shoes, where he also served as the Chief Brand Officer. In March 2004, DC Shoes was acquired by Quicksilver for $87 million. Following the sale, Block shifted his focus to Hoonigan Industries, an apparel brand for auto enthusiasts, where he was a co-owner.

Early Life & Career

Ken Block was born on November 21, 1967, in Long Beach, California. He began his rallying career with the Vermont SportsCar team in 2005 and competed in the 2006 Rally America National Championship, finishing second overall. By the end of 2007, Block had 19 podiums and 8 overall victories. In 2008, he again finished second in the Rally America National Championship. Notably, on February 27, 2010, he won the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood (Rally America) for the fifth consecutive time, breaking a record previously held by John Buffum.

On March 23, 2011, Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino were hospitalized after rolling their Ford Fiesta RS WRC during the shakedown stage of the Rally de Portugal in Faro, but both were later reported to be okay. In 2013, Block entered the top ten of the Mexican rally, earning his first six points for the championship and achieving a best-ever 7th overall finish. He continued his competitive streak in 2014 with Castrol as his sponsor, finishing 12th at the WRC in Catalunya, Spain. Throughout his Rally America career, Block participated in 60 starts, winning 16 times with 28 podium finishes.

Block was not limited to rally driving; he also competed in action sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. In 2010, he co-founded Gymkhana Grid and won the all-wheel-drive event in 2014. In 2021, he finished 4th in the Baja 1000 in the trophy truck class. He also set a world record for the fastest snowcat, a modified Ford Raptor known as the RaptorTrax.

Personal Life & Death

Ken Block married his wife, Lucy, in July 2004, and the couple had three daughters. Their daughter Lia started competing in rallying in late 2021 and entered the Extreme E series in 2023.

In 2021, Block collaborated with Rotiform and Fuel Off-Road through Wheel Pros on four sets of signature wheels.

Ken Block passed away at the age of 55 due to a snowmobile accident near his ranch in Woodland, Utah, on January 2, 2023. The snowmobile overturned on a steep slope and landed on top of him, causing his death at the scene of the accident. In his honor, his number 43 was retired from the World Rally Championship for the 2023 season.
