Duncan joined the Royal Navy in 1964, serving as a junior second-class engineering mechanic at HMS Ganges and later on the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. He was dishonorably discharged after an incident involving an officer and subsequently spent nine months in a military detention facility.

Starting with odd jobs, Duncan trained as an agricultural vehicle fitter and later became a tractor repairman. He moved to Jersey in 1974, where he took on various jobs, including hospital porter and ice cream salesman.

Moving to Stockton-on-Tees, Duncan's significant business journey began with purchasing an ice cream truck for £450. Expanding his venture during the 70s and 80s, he eventually sold the business for £28,000.
