Jessica Michelle Chastain was born on March 24, 1977, in Sacramento, California. Her parents, Jerri Renee Hastey and musician Michael Monasterio, were teenagers at the time of her birth. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Michael Hastey, a firefighter, along with her siblings. She developed a passion for acting at the age of 7 after attending a theater production with her grandmother.

Jessica attended El Camino Fundamental High School and later earned an adult diploma due to excessive absences. She joined the Oregon Shakespeare Festival as a teenager and later attended Sacramento City College. Chastain's breakthrough came with a scholarship to the Juilliard School, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2003, thanks to a scholarship funded by Robin Williams.
