Gary Chapman was born on August 19, 1957, in Waurika, Oklahoma, and raised in De Leon, Texas. His father, Reverend Terry W. Chapman, was an Assemblies of God pastor who ministered for 56 years. His mother was also a pastor. Throughout high school, Chapman performed in various bands. He attended Southwestern Assemblies of God College in Waxahachie, Texas, for his higher education and later moved to Nashville, Tennessee.
Chapman's breakthrough as a songwriter came in 1979 with the song "Father's Eyes," recorded by Amy Grant. In 1982, he achieved another hit with T. G. Sheppard's "Finally."
Chapman's debut album, "Sincerely Yours," was released in 1981, earning him the Gospel Music Association’s Dove Award for Songwriter of the Year. His subsequent albums include "Happenin’… Live" (1983), "Everyday Man" (1987), and "The Light Inside" (1994), which was nominated for a Grammy and featured the hit song "Sweet Glow of Mercy." He released "The Early Years" and "Shelter" in 1996, the latter peaking at number seven on the contemporary Christian chart.
