Early Life

Troyal Garth Brooks was born on February 7, 1962, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is the youngest child of Troyal Raymond Brooks and Colleen McElroy Carroll. Garth's father worked as a draftsman for an oil company, while his mother was a country singer in the 1950s and appeared on the television show "Ozark Jubilee." He has four older half-siblings and one older sister. Growing up, Garth enjoyed singing during weekly family talent shows but was more focused on sports in high school. He played football, baseball, and was on the track and field team, specializing in javelin. Thanks to a track scholarship, he attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing in 1984.

Early Career

After college, Brooks began performing in local bars and clubs in 1985. An entertainment attorney from Dallas offered to produce his first demo, eventually convincing him to move to Nashville in 1987 to pursue a record contract.

Success

Brooks released his first album, "Hungry Years," in 1989, reaching number two on the country album charts. His first number-one hit, "If Tomorrow Never Comes," is from this album. He toured with country legend Kenny Rogers the same year. His second album, "No Fences," released in 1990, stayed atop the country album charts for 23 weeks and produced four number-one singles. Brooks continued his streak with "Ropin' the Wind" in 1991, becoming the first country artist to debut at number one on the main album charts. By 1992, he released his fourth album, "The Chase."

Brooks' fifth album "In Pieces," released in 1993, topped both country and main charts and led to his first world tour. In 1995, he released "Fresh Horses" and went on a second world tour, playing to 5.5 million people and grossing over $105 million. In 1998, he released "Double Live," his first live album.

In October 1999, Brooks released "Garth Brooks in… The Life of Chris Gaines," which did not meet commercial expectations. The following year, he announced his retirement from recording and performing.

In 2007, Brooks returned for nine sold-out concerts in Kansas City, meant to be a single show, ultimately selling about 140,000 tickets. In 2008, he played five sold-out fundraising shows in Los Angeles for the 2007 wildfires.

In 2009, Brooks began a Las Vegas residency at Steve Wynn's Encore Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Wynn provided a private jet for him to balance family life in Oklahoma and weekend shows in Vegas.

Brooks came out of retirement in 2014 with a new single, "People Loving People," a new album, "Man Against Machine," and a world tour. In 2016, he released "The Ultimate Collection" with Target, the album "Gunslinger," and the single "Baby, Let's Lay Down and Dance."

In 2018, "All Day Long," from the album "Fun," was released. Brooks announced his Stadium Tour in 30 North American stadiums and embarked on a Dive Bar Tour across seven U.S. cities in 2019.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Brooks and Yearwood performed a Facebook Live concert viewed by 5.2 million people. Due to high demand, they performed again on CBS, raising $1 million for pandemic relief efforts, with 5.6 million viewers.

In June 2020, Brooks performed a concert broadcast at 300 drive-in theaters in the U.S. and Canada. In November 2022, he announced the Garth Brooks/Plus ONE Las Vegas residency for 2023 at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

Personal Life

Garth met his first wife, songwriter Sandy Mahl, in college. They married on May 24, 1986, and had three daughters: Taylor, August, and Allie. The couple divorced on December 17, 2001, with Garth paying Sandy a $125 million settlement.

On December 10, 2005, Garth married fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood. In July 2013, Garth became a grandfather when his daughter August welcomed Karalynn with Chance Michael Russell.
