D'Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, is an acclaimed American musician and producer with a net worth of $1 million. His musical journey started at the age of three when he began playing the piano. D'Angelo was born on February 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia. Raised in a Pentecostal household, he began showcasing his musical talent early, playing the piano by age three. As a teenager, he formed the band Michael Archer and Precise, performing around Richmond and even competing at the Apollo Theater in 1991. He also produced and rapped in the group Intelligent, Deadly but Unique (I.D.U).
At 18, D'Angelo dropped out of school and moved to New York City to pursue his musical aspirations full-time.
In 1993, D'Angelo signed a recording contract with EMI Music after auditioning for Gary Harris, the head of A&R. His first notable success came with the 1994 single 'U Will Know,' co-written and co-produced for the R&B supergroup Black Men United. The song, featured on the soundtrack for Jason's Lyric, peaked at number five on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, thus amplifying buzz around his name.
In July 1995, he released his debut album Brown Sugar. Initially, sales were slow, but it eventually became a hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and remaining charted for 54 weeks. The album featured successful singles like 'Lady', 'Brown Sugar,' and 'Cruisin'. It was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1996.
Following his debut, D'Angelo took a four-and-a-half-year hiatus, struggling with writer’s block. During this time, he released cover versions, collaborating with artists like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. His 2000 album Voodoo was well-received and earned him a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Its hit song 'Untitled (How Does It Feel)' and its provocative music video cemented D'Angelo's status as a sex symbol.

Despite the success, D'Angelo struggled with his sex symbol status and withdrew from the limelight after touring for Voodoo. He continued collaborating with artists such as J Dilla and Snoop Dogg. In 2014, D'Angelo made a strong comeback with the release of his third studio album, Black Messiah, winning two awards at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards and embarking on a global tour. He also contributed to the soundtrack for Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 and performed at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021.
In the 1990s, D'Angelo dated soul singer Angie Stone, who inspired his Brown Sugar album. The couple had a son, Michael D'Angelo Archer II, born in 1998. D'Angelo has two other children – a daughter, Imani, born in 1999, and a son, Morocco, born in 2010.
The early 2000s were challenging for D'Angelo due to drug and alcohol issues, leading to his arrest in 2005. However, he managed to clean up his act and returned to the music scene in 2014.
