Early Life

Dallas Austin was born on December 29, 1970, in Columbus, Georgia, to parents who owned a nightclub. From an early age, he was passionate about music and learned to play the keyboard. He played instruments and DJed at his parents' nightclub, viewing music as an escape from his challenging family environment. His two brothers frequently faced legal troubles, prompting Austin to move to Atlanta to live with his aunt during his teenage years. Eventually, his mother and brothers joined him. Despite their relocation, they experienced significant tension due to the presence of the Ku Klux Klan in their neighborhood.

Music Career, 1989-1999

Austin's breakthrough in the music industry came through his manager William Burke, who introduced him to Joyce Irby of the band Klymaxx. In 1989, he co-produced Irby's hit single "Mr. DJ" and also contributed to Troop's album "Attitude." His collaborative works with Irby on this album included the tracks "My Music," "My Love," and "I Will Always Love You." He then worked on several notable hits with Another Bad Creation, Boyz II Men, and TLC. Some of his remarkable projects include Boyz II Men's album "Cooleyhighharmony" and TLC's albums "Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip" and "CrazySexyCool."

In 1994, Austin achieved massive commercial success with TLC's single "Creep," which became the band's first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100. He continued to make significant strides with TLC's album "FanMail," earning a Grammy Award nomination for Album of the Year. He also received recognition for Boyz II Men's award-winning album "II" and Monica's hit albums "Miss Thang" and "The Boy is Mine." Throughout the decade, Austin extended his expertise to artists like Madonna, After 7, Illegal, Da King & I, and Ya'll So Stupid.
