Returning to the West End stage, Barnes took on the starring role of World War I soldier Stephen Wraysford in Birdsong, a drama adapted from Sebastian Faulks' novel. He then acted alongside Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana in The Words, portraying the younger version of Jeremy Irons' character, who had written a manuscript retrieved by Bradley Cooper's character. Additionally, Barnes played Thomas in the adaptation of the book The Spook's Apprentice, titled Seventh Son.
