Anthony Richard Anstead was born on March 28, 1979, in Plymouth, Devon, England. He spent his formative years in Ely, Cambridgeshire, before moving to Hertfordshire at the age of 10. Anstead attended Richard Hale School in Hertford and completed his A-levels at Haileybury School.

Ant Anstead joined Hertfordshire Constabulary as a Police Constable at the young age of 18 in 1999. He was stationed at Bishop's Stortford and later moved to Cheshunt police station, eventually becoming a member of the Tactical Firearms Team in Welwyn Garden City by 23. Reflecting on his six-year tenure, Anstead said, "I loved being in the police. I saw and did things that people would shudder at." He received two commendations for bravery during his police service. In 2005, he left the police force to pursue car building full-time and started creating bespoke classic vehicles. His car builds have set nine World Records, including building the largest Airfix auto model.
