Angela Chao was born to James Chao and Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, founders of the international shipping company, Foremost Group. She was the sister of Elaine Chao, a prominent political figure, and through Elaine, Senator Mitch McConnell was her brother-in-law.

Angela initially joined the family business and took over as Chairman and CEO of Foremost Group in 2008. The company, established in New York City in 1964, is a leader in international transportation and shipping.

Angela Chao was also well-regarded as a public speaker and served as President of the Foremost Foundation. She was a board member of numerous prestigious organizations including the Bank of China, Harvard Business School's Dean's Advisors, the American Bureau of Shipping Council, International Maritime Business Department Advisory Board of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Opera, and more. She earned her MBA from Harvard University.

Personal Life

At the time of her death, Angela was married to billionaire venture capitalist Jim Breyer, who is known for being an early investor in Facebook through his venture capital firm, Accel Partners. Angela was previously married to financier Bruce Wasserstein.
