Born on June 20, 1929, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Edgar Bronfman Sr. was the heir to the Seagram's fortune, a legacy initiated by his Russian immigrant father. The elder Bronfman started by smuggling whiskey across the US-Canadian border and later acquired Seagram Company Ltd in 1928, transforming it into the world's largest distiller.

Edgar Bronfman Sr joined the family business in 1950 after earning a BA from Williams College. By 1957, he had become the head of Seagram's American subsidiary. Under his leadership, the company expanded its product range, optimized distribution processes, and grew its global sales.
