Edgar Bronfman Sr was a notable Canadian-American businessman with a net worth of $2.5 billion at the time of his passing. Born on June 20, 1929, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Edgar Bronfman Sr. was the heir to the Seagram's fortune, a legacy initiated by his Russian immigrant father. The elder Bronfman started by smuggling whiskey across the US-Canadian border and later acquired Seagram Company Ltd in 1928, transforming it into the world's largest distiller.
Edgar Bronfman Sr joined the family business in 1950 after earning a BA from Williams College. By 1957, he had become the head of Seagram's American subsidiary. Under his leadership, the company expanded its product range, optimized distribution processes, and grew its global sales.
In 1971, upon his father's death, Edgar Sr. assumed the roles of president, treasurer, and director of Distillers Corporation-Seagrams Ltd. His tenure saw significant growth and diversification of the company. In 1994, his son Edgar Jr. took over as CEO.
Beyond his business acumen, Edgar Bronfman Sr was also recognized for his contributions to the World Jewish Congress (WJC), an international federation of Jewish communities and organizations. As a dedicated philanthropist, he donated substantial sums to various charitable causes. Personally, he was married five times—twice to his third wife—and fathered seven children. Edgar Bronfman Sr passed away on December 21, 2013.
