Amy is of Jewish descent through her mother and has English, Irish, and Swiss ancestry through her Protestant father. Raised in Glastonbury, Connecticut, she attended Glastonbury High School, where she actively participated in school theater productions. For her higher education, Amy went to Harvard University, where she graduated in 1987 with a degree in comparative religion and co-founded the Cornerstone Theatre Company.

Television Career

Amy began her television career in 1992 with the CBS series Middle Ages. Her breakthrough came in 1993 when she played Janice Licalsi, a mob-connected detective, on ABC's NYPD Blue, earning two Emmy Award nominations. Later, she played Faye Moskowitz on NBC's Frasier and starred alongside Kathy Baker in the TV film A.T.F.. Another notable role was in Mary Cassatt: An American Impressionist. From 1999 to 2005, Amy starred in the CBS legal drama Judging Amy, a series based on her mother’s life.

Following Judging Amy, Amy played Dr. Violet Turner in the ABC medical drama Private Practice from 2007 to 2013. She later portrayed Laurie Garvey in HBO's The Leftovers (2014-2017). On the film front, Amy debuted in 1995's Bye Bye Love. She played roles in Casper and Michael Mann's Heat the same year. The following year, she starred in Fear and Daylight. Amy continued to excel in films like Nevada (1997), and Neil LaBute's Your Friends & Neighbors (1998).

Amy kicked off the 21st century with roles in Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, Off the Map (2003), and Nine Lives. She was also seen in the thrillers 88 Minutes and The Jane Austen Book Club in 2007.
