Early Life

Tyler Gregory Okonma was born in Ladera Heights, California, on March 6, 1991. His mother is of mixed African-American and European-Canadian descent, and his father is Nigerian. Growing up in the neighborhoods of Ladera Heights and Hawthorne, Tyler showed early interest in music by creating album covers and tracklists. By 14, he taught himself piano. He attended 12 different schools across Los Angeles and Sacramento. During high school, he worked at Starbucks and FedEx. His nickname, Tyler The Creator, comes from his MySpace page.

Career

Tyler, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies formed the hip-hop collective Odd Future in 2007. Their first mixtape, "The Odd Future Tape," was self-released in 2008. Tyler's debut solo mixtape, "Bastard," released on December 25, 2009, landed at number 32 on Pitchfork Media's Top Albums of 2010 list. In February 2011, the video for Tyler's song "Yonkers" gained significant media attention, leading to an extended version. "Yonkers" won him the 2011 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist. This buzz attracted industry titans like Jimmy Iovine, Rick Ross, Steve Rifkind, and Jay-Z. Tyler and Odd Future signed a deal with Sony in Spring 2011, releasing his debut album, "Goblin," in May that year.

Tyler's first television appearance was on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" in February 2011, performing "Sandwitches." In March 2012, Tyler and Odd Future's show "Loiter Squad" premiered on Adult Swim, produced by the creators of "Jackass." The show ran for three seasons, featuring live-action segments, pranks, sketches, and music.

Tyler released "Domo23," the first single from his second album, "Wolf," on Valentine's Day 2013. He appeared again on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" that same day to perform two songs. He embarked on a tour of Europe and North America in March and April 2013, with "Wolf" releasing in early April 2013.

In April 2013, the video for "Fucking Young," part of Tyler's 2015 album "Cherry Bomb," debuted on Odd Future's YouTube channel. He performed at Coachella 2015 and went on a world tour. Tyler's fourth album, "Flower Boy," released in summer 2017, was supported by singles "Boredom" and "I Ain't Got Time!" and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

In May 2019, his album "Igor" debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, Tyler's first number-one album in the U.S., and won the Grammy for Best Rap Album. His sixth studio album, "Call Me If You Get Lost," also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. In March 2023, "Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale" was released with unreleased songs from his latest album.

Tyler launched his fashion brand GOLF WANG, which drew inspiration from the phrase "Wolf Gang" frequently mentioned in his early music. Known for its vibrant and colorful products, GOLF WANG includes clothes, shoes, accessories, and skateboards, designed and styled by Tyler himself.

His GOLF WANG store, located at 350 N. Fairfax Boulevard in Los Angeles, was looted and damaged during the 2020 protests.

Tyler's sexuality has been a topic of speculation, as his lyrics and interviews allude to same-sex relationships. He dated Jaden Smith in 2018. Tyler is an atheist, and many of his lyrics reflect anti-religious sentiments. He collects bicycles and skateboards and was banned from the UK for five years in August 2015 due to lyric content from his "Bastard" mixtape.

In February 2019, the UK ban was believed to be lifted, but a scheduled performance in London was canceled by police due to safety concerns amid an overly crowded and rowdy audience.
