Early Life
Born Michael Coletti on January 22, 1965, in Cleveland, Ohio, Adler is the son of Deanna (Jewish-American) and Michael (Italian-American). After Deanna remarried Melvin Adler, Steven and his siblings relocated to Los Angeles, California. Steven lived with his grandparents in Hollywood due to behavior issues before returning home and learning the drums as a teenager. He became friends with future Guns N' Roses guitarist, Slash, during junior high.
Guns N' Roses
Steven returned to Hollywood in 1983, forming Road Crew with Slash. Although unsuccessful, they eventually joined Axl Rose’s band Hollywood Rose. Later, in 1985, Rose, Slash, Adler, Izzy Stradlin, and Duff McKagan founded Guns N' Roses, signing with Geffen Records in 1986. Their debut album, "Appetite for Destruction," topped multiple charts and achieved 18× Platinum in the U.S., featuring hits like "Welcome to the Jungle," "Sweet Child o' Mine," and "Paradise City." "G N' R Lies," their second album, reached #2 on the "Billboard" 200 and achieved 5× Platinum status in the U.S. Despite his success, Adler’s heroin addiction led to his dismissal in 1990.
Adler returned briefly after promising to curb his drug use but was ultimately dismissed for being unable to perform during the recording of "Civil War" for the 1991 album "Use Your Illusion II."
After Guns N' Roses
After leaving Guns N' Roses, Adler reformed Road Crew but faced ongoing drug issues. In 1991, he sued his former bandmates over his dismissal, resulting in a $2.25 million settlement and 15% of future royalties for the music he recorded with them. In 2003, he joined Suki Jones (later Adler’s Appetite), releasing EPs in 2005 and 2012. He also performed on Slash’s 2010 solo album and formed the band Adler, releasing "Back from the Dead" in 2012.
In 2016, Adler reunited with Guns N' Roses for select performances during their "Not in This Lifetime… Tour." His band, Adler’s Appetite, reformed in 2018 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Appetite for Destruction."
