In 1991, he renamed the company America Online (AOL) and focused on community-based applications. By 2002, AOL had 26.7 million subscribers. Case was instrumental in orchestrating AOL's merger with Time Warner, seen as one of the most disastrous corporate mergers of all time. He resigned as AOL's CEO in 2003 to concentrate on his initiatives funded by his company Revolution, LLC. Additionally, he chairs the Case Foundation and the Startup America Partnership, and is a member of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

Early Life and Education

Steve Case was born on August 21, 1958, in Honolulu, Hawaii to Carol and Daniel. He has a brother named Jeff, a sister named Carin, and another brother, Dan, who passed away in 2002. Case attended the private Punahou School, from which he graduated in 1976. He then attended Williams College in Massachusetts, graduating in 1980 with a degree in political science.

Career Beginnings

Following his college graduation, Case worked as an assistant brand manager at Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio. He then became a marketing manager at Pizza Hut in Wichita, Kansas. In 1983, introduced by his brother Dan to Control Video Corporation CEO Bill von Meister, Case was hired as a marketing consultant and later became a full-time marketing employee.

Quantum Computer Services

After Control Video Corporation dissolved, employee Jim Kimsey founded Quantum Computer Services and hired Case as vice president of marketing, promoting him to executive vice president in 1987. Case partnered with Marc Seriff to create the online service Quantum Link for the Commodore 64, and later PC Link for IBM and AppleLink for Apple computers. He also pioneered online interactive games such as "Habitat," "Club Caribe," and "Quantum Space."

AOL

In 1991, Quantum Computer Services became America Online (AOL), merging its PC and Apple services. Case became CEO and by 1994, AOL had one million subscribers. Pioneering social media with chat rooms, forums, and instant messaging, AOL's user base hit 26.7 million in 2002. However, the 2001 merger with Time Warner was a disaster following the dot-com bubble burst and accounting scandals. Case resigned as chairman in early 2003 but remained on the board of directors for three years.
