Early Life
Steven Michael Burns was born on October 9, 1973, in Boyertown, Pennsylvania. He grew up with his mother Janet, father Joseph, and two older sisters, Jennifer and Karen. His father worked as a human resources director after serving in the U.S. Navy and sadly passed away from cancer in 2015. Steve graduated from Boyertown Area Senior High School in 1992 and later attended DeSales University on an acting scholarship. During his youth, he was involved in bands like Nine Pound Truck, Sudden Impact US, and the Ivys. His performance at the 1995 Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival helped him secure an agent, leading him to move to New York City to pursue acting. Burns began his career as a voice-over artist for commercials and landed roles on “Law & Order” and “VeggieTales Classics!”
Career
In 1995, Steve auditioned for “Blue's Clues” with a distinctive look, including long hair and Army fatigue pants. Initially met with hesitation by Nickelodeon executives, he was asked to present a more conservative appearance for subsequent auditions and eventually secured the role. “Blue's Clues” debuted on September 8, 1996, becoming an instant hit. Steve appeared in nearly 100 episodes before leaving in 2002, introducing viewers to his replacement, Donovan Patton. His departure was partly influenced by his desire not to lose his hair on a children’s TV show. The original “Blue's Clues” series concluded in 2006.
In 2019, Burns returned to the franchise alongside Patton in “Blue's Clues & You!” to introduce the new host, Joshua Dela Cruz. In September 2021, Steve garnered significant attention by appearing in a heartfelt video celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary, addressing his grown-up fans and expressing his gratitude for their continued friendship.

From 2006 to 2010, Burns narrated the children’s program “Roll Play” on Treehouse TV. His debut album, “Songs for Dustmites,” came out in 2003, and several tracks featured Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips. Burns’ band, Steve Burns and the Struggle, released “Deep Sea Recovery Efforts” in 2009. In 2016, under the moniker STEVENSTEVEN, Burns and Drozd released the children’s album “Foreverywhere” and a music video for “The Unicorn and Princess Rainbow.” Steve also acted in the film “Christmas on Mars” (2008) and played a vampire in “Netherbeast Incorporated” (2007), featuring Darrell Hammond, Dave Foley, and Jason Mewes. Burns also appeared in the YouTube series “The Professionals” in 2012 and was involved in university theater productions of “Amadeus” (2007) and “The Comedy of Errors” (2011).
Personal Life
In 2000, Steve was featured in People magazine’s “America’s 100 Most Eligible Bachelors” list. He once mentioned he was looking for a woman who was a blend of Christy Turlington, Gwen Stefani, and Janeane Garofalo. He has been the subject of false rumors about his death and drug addiction, which led him to make appearances on “The Rosie O'Donnell Show” and “Today” to dispel these claims. In a bizarre twist, his Wikipedia page was briefly edited in 2021 to include false assertions that he was involved in various military operations, which were all untrue.
Award Nominations
In 2001, Burns earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series for “Blue's Clues.” He also received a nomination in 2020 for Outstanding Preschool Children's Series for “Blue's Clues & You!”

In 2008, Steve moved into a 2,180-square-foot home in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood. The residence was originally a garage and woodshop before being transformed into a two-bedroom, three-bathroom house with 28-foot ceilings and wood walls. In November 2020, Burns listed the property on the market for $3.35 million.
