Steven Hiroyuki Aoki was born on November 30, 1977, in Miami, Florida, to Rocky Aoki and Chizuru Kobayashi. His family later moved to Newport Beach, California. His father, Rocky Aoki, founded the renowned restaurant chain Benihana and was a former Japanese wrestler. Steve has two older siblings, Kana and Kevin, and a half-sister, Devon Aoki. He graduated from Newport Harbor High School in 1995, attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, and earned BA degrees in Feminist Studies and Sociology. During his college years, he hosted underground concerts at the Santa Barbara Student Housing Cooperative.
Career
Steve Aoki gained a substantial following on college campuses by performing up to 250 shows a year. During his 2012 Deadmeat Tour, he headlined more than 55 cities in 60 dates across the United States and Canada.
In 1996, he founded Dim Mak Records, named after his childhood hero Bruce Lee. Aoki has also been a notable club promoter and DJ, remixing tracks for artists like Jackson 5, Drake, Kanye West, Eminem, The Killers, Lenny Kravitz, and Snoop Dogg. His debut album "Wonderland" released in 2012. He has since released several albums including "Neon Future I" and "Neon Future II", "Steve Aoki Presents Kolony," "Neon Future III," and, in 2020, "Neon Future IV." One of his most successful singles is "A Light That Never Comes" with Linkin Park. In 2019, he released "Let It Be Me," a collaboration with the Backstreet Boys.

In 2015, Steve Aoki married long-time girlfriend Tiernan Cowling in Hawaii. Cowling is Australian, and the couple had been engaged for five years.
Aoki is an avid gamer. In 2020, he participated in the Warzone Royal Ruckus, a charity tournament featuring gamers, athletes, musicians, and influencers playing Call of Duty to support the Equal Justice Initiative. This organization strives to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the U.S., challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the country's most vulnerable.
Philanthropy
The Aoki Foundation funds research on the brain, focusing on regenerative medicine and brain preservation. The foundation also supports disaster relief, animal rights, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
