Shelby Bryan is an American telecommunications pioneer, business executive, futurist, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist with a substantial net worth of $200 million. He is widely recognized for founding Millicom International Cellular S.A. Beyond his business accomplishments, Shelby is also known for his marriage to fashion editor Anna Wintour which lasted from 2004 to 2020. The couple started dating in 1999.
In his personal life, Bryan came into the relationship with Wintour with four children from two previous relationships. At the time of their meeting, both were married. The couple reportedly split in October 2020 and had homes in Greenwich Village, NYC, the Hamptons, and Houston.
Shelby Bryan was born in Houston, Texas in March 1946. He attended the University of Texas, later earning his MBA from Harvard Business School.
Early in his career, Bryan worked for Ralph Nader to help pass the Clean Water Act. In 1973, he joined Morgan Stanley but left in 1977 to establish Austin Resources Corporation, an oil and gas company. Bryan also founded a bank holding company that became Prosperity Bank.
In 1980, Shelby moved to New York and, alongside Jan Stenbeck, founded Millicom. The company grew to be the second-largest cellular company globally. By 1981, Millicom founded Microtel Communications. In 1984, Bryan took on the role of CEO of ICG Communications. Later on, he established Pingtone Communications, one of the first VOIP companies in the United States.
