He was born Samuel Dale Brownback on September 12, 1956, in Garnett, Kansas. During his time at Kansas State University, he was elected student body president and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He earned his J.D. in 1982.
Early Career
After law school, Brownback spent almost a year as a broadcaster, hosting a weekly half-hour show. He then became an attorney in Manhattan, Kansas, before being appointed Kansas secretary of agriculture in 1986. In 1990, he joined the White House Fellow program and was detailed to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative until 1991.
Political Career
In 1995, Brownback started his political career in the United States House of Representatives, representing Kansas's 2nd congressional district. He held the position until 1996, when he was elected to the United States Senate. He served Kansas in the Senate from 1996 to 2011.
Brownback made an unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 2008, withdrawing before the primaries and endorsing John McCain, who became the Republican nominee.
Governorship
In 2010, Sam Brownback was elected as the 46th Governor of Kansas and took office in January 2011. He served in this role until January 31, 2018.
