In 1976, Carlyle was selected for the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League Second All-Star Team. That same year, he was drafted #30 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL Draft and #69 by the Cincinnati Stingers in the WHA Draft. Carlyle initially played for the Maple Leafs from 1976 to 1978 before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he spent six years from 1978 to 1984.
Carlyle continued his professional journey with the Winnipeg Jets from 1984 until his retirement in 1993. During his tenure, he earned prestigious accolades, including the Norris Trophy for top defensive player in 1991 and was named to the NHL First All-Star Team.
In 1989, Carlyle represented Canada at the World Championship in Sweden, where he helped his team secure a Silver medal. Opting to end his playing career on a high note, Carlyle soon transitioned into coaching.

He eventually became head coach of the Manitoba Moose from 2004 to 2005.
From 2005 to 2011, Carlyle served as the head coach for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks/Ducks, leading them to a triumphant Stanley Cup victory in the 2006-07 season. His coaching career also saw him guiding the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2012 until January 2015.
