Randall Cobb was born on May 7, 1950, in Bridge City, Texas, to Norma and Williard Cobb. Raised in Abilene, Texas, he attended Abilene High School. Cobb later enrolled at Abilene Christian University but left at 19. Instead of traditional paths, he turned to karate, living in a dojo and earning his keep by cleaning mats. After earning a black belt, Cobb transitioned to kickboxing.
Initially a kickboxer, Cobb won his first nine matches by knockout. His debut professional kickboxing bout was in El Paso, Texas, in 1975, where he triumphed over David Ochoa. Following this, Cobb was signed by boxing expert Paul Clinite.
Cobb's professional boxing journey began in 1977, with a knockout victory against Pedro Vega in El Paso. Remaining unbeaten in 1977, 1978, and 1979, Cobb punched his way to successive knockout victories. Despite a streak-breaking split decision loss to Ken Norton in 1980, and another defeat to Michael Dokes in 1981, Cobb made a strong comeback, defeating Harry Terrell, Bernardo Mercado, and Jeff Shelburg. In 1982, Cobb fought for Larry Holmes's WBC World Heavyweight Championship but lost by unanimous decision. Following a mixed record of wins and losses, Cobb finally retired in 1993 after testing positive for cocaine in a 1992 bout against Sonny Barch.
Cobb debuted onscreen in the 1979 remake of "The Champ." Notable film roles followed in "Uncommon Valor," "The Golden Child," "Critical Condition," and "Raising Arizona," playing memorable characters such as the outlaw biker Leonard Smalls. He also appeared in TV series like "Miami Vice," "MacGyver," and "Walker, Texas Ranger." Cobb's filmography includes "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult," and "Liar Liar." His last acting role was in the 2001 series finale of "Walker, Texas Ranger."
Randall "Tex" Cobb's personal life has its share of triumphs and tragedies. He is the father of two sons: Joshua, who had a brief boxing career, and Bo, who passed away in an accident in 2001. Residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Cobb graduated magna cum laude from Temple University in 2008, with a bachelor's degree in sport and recreation management.
