Raised by his Christian mother, Sally, and Jewish father, Laurence (a U.S. Marine), along with his younger sister Mary, Berg's second cousin is H. G. After attending The Taft School in Connecticut, he enrolled at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, graduating with a degree in theater arts and theater history in 1984.
