She is the daughter of Jackie Clarkson, a local politician and councilwoman, and Arthur Clarkson, a school administrator at Louisiana State University School of Medicine. She has four sisters and graduated from O. Perry Walker High School in 1977.

Clarkson initially attended Louisiana State University, studying speech pathology before transferring to Fordham University in New York City to pursue acting. She graduated summa cum laude in 1982 and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1985.

Career

After completing her education at Yale, Clarkson was cast in the 1986 Broadway production of "The House of Blue Leaves." She made her film debut in "The Untouchables" in 1987, portraying Catherine Ness. In 1988, she appeared in Clint Eastwood's "The Dead Pool," the fifth installment of the "Dirty Harry" series.

In 1989, she returned to Broadway with "Eastern Standard." During the early 1990s, Clarkson faced challenges finding roles.
