She actively participated in her high school's musical theater department and originally aimed to study at Julliard but opted for health education at Stony Brook University, which she left after a year to marry her high-school sweetheart, Dennis T. Benatar.

Pat Benatar's career took off after she left her job at a bank to sing at a Holiday Inn, later becoming a singing waitress at The Roaring Twenties nightclub. Here, she met pianist Phil Coxon and formed a duo. Eventually, Benatar moved to New York City in 1975 to pursue a solo career and gained attention for her rendition of Judy Garland's "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody". Pat signed with Chrysalis Records in 1978 and released her debut album "In the Heat of the Night" in August 1979, which peaked at #12 in the U.S. Her second album, "Crimes of Passion," featured the hit single "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."
