Pamela Adlon was born Pamela Fionna Segall on July 9, 1966, in New York City. Her mother, Marina, is English, while her father, Don, was an American science-fiction novelist and comic book writer. Pamela lived bi-coastally between New York and Los Angeles with her family, setting up their NYC home at the Carnegie House on West 57th Street. She began voice-over work at a young age and appeared in film and TV projects while in L.A. Pamela spent a semester at Sarah Lawrence College, later moving to Laurel Canyon in L.A.

As a teenager, Adlon appeared in "Grease 2" (1982) and had a recurring role on NBC's "The Facts of Life." She featured in films like "Bad Manners" (1984), "SpaceCamp" (1986), and "After Midnight" (1989), and she acted in "Say Anything" alongside John Cusack and Ione Skye.
