Early Life

Nate Berkus was born Nathan Jay Berkus on September 17, 1971, in Orange County, California. His mother, designer Nancy Golden, co-founded the Minnesota chapter of the Independent Designers Association and appeared on HGTV shows, while his father, Michael A. Berkus, co-founded the National Sports Collectors Convention. After Nancy and Michael divorced in 1973, Nate grew up in Hopkins, Minnesota, in a Jewish household. He attended Cushing Academy in Massachusetts and later earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology and French from Lake Forest College. Following internships in Chicago and Paris, he founded Nate Berkus Associates in 1995.

Career

In 2005, Nate Berkus launched a merchandise line at Linens 'n Things and hosted "Oprah's Big Give" in 2008. "The Nate Berkus Show," which aired from 2010 to 2012, received a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lifestyle Program. His 2012 book "The Things That Matter" became a New York Times Best Seller. Berkus introduced a bed and bath line at Target and the Nate Berkus Fabric Collection at Calico Corners in subsequent years. In 2014, he hosted NBC's "American Dream Builders." Together with his husband, Brent, he stars on "Nate & Jeremiah by Design." Personal Life

In December 2004, Nate Berkus and his partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea, were visiting Sri Lanka during the Indian Ocean tsunami. Sadly, Bengoechea was presumed dead after the couple was swept out to sea. Berkus has spoken publicly about how the tragedy profoundly affected him. In April 2013, Nate became engaged to Jeremiah Brent, and they married on May 4, 2014, at the New York Public Library. The couple welcomed daughter Poppy on March 23, 2015, and son Oskar on March 26, 2018, via surrogates. In 2014, Berkus and Brent were featured in Banana Republic's "True Outfitters" ads, making history as the first same-sex couple in a clothing retailer's ads. The family graced the cover of the September 2015 issue of "Architectural Digest."
