Michael Benjamin Bay was born on February 17, 1965, in Los Angeles, California. Raised in a Jewish family by adoptive parents Jim and Harriet, Bay attended Santa Monica's Crossroads School. After earning his post-graduate degree, Bay directed music videos and commercials, winning a Clio Award for his first national commercial for the Red Cross in 1992. His "Got Milk?" campaign in 1993 brought him the Grand Prix Clio Award. Bay began his film career directing the successful "Bad Boys" in 1995, which grossed $141.4 million. He continued with hits like "The Rock" (1996) and "Armageddon" (1998), which grossed $335.1 million and $553.7 million, respectively.

In 2001, Bay directed and co-produced "Pearl Harbor," grossing $449.2 million and winning an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. He then directed "Bad Boys II" (2003), which grossed $273 million, and his first non-Bruckheimer film "The Island" (2005).
