Wayne developed an interest in music while in middle school, playing bass guitar in the school band. By age 13, he began making beats. During his teen years, he attended Parkway North High School and initially aspired to be a rapper but later focused on hip-hop production.

While still in high school, Wayne used social media to network with hip-hop artists. His mother would drive him from St. Louis to Atlanta to collaborate with these artists. One of his early collaborations was with Tay Don, which opened doors to working with Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman, and Future. After high school, he moved to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College as a business management major, but he took a semester off to focus on his music career. He released his debut mixtape, "19 & Boomin," in 2013 under the stage name Metro Boomin.
