Lucas Black was born on November 29, 1982, in Decatur, Alabama, to Jan, an office worker, and Larry, a museum employee. Raised in Speake, Alabama, he played high school football for the Speake Bobcats and graduated in 2001. Black grew up in the Southern Baptist faith alongside his two older siblings.

Film Career

Lucas Black's film journey began at age 11 with his role as Ebb Lipnicki in the 1994 drama The War. His breakthrough came in 1996 with significant roles in Billy Bob Thornton's Sling Blade and Rob Reiner's Ghosts of Mississippi. By 1998, he secured a part in the adaptation of The X-Files series and played a larger role in Antonio Banderas's Crazy in Alabama (1999), set in 1965 Alabama. His voice was also featured in the children's educational film Our Friend, Martin.

In the early 2000s, he appeared in Billy Bob Thornton's adaptation of All the Pretty Horses and in the star-studded Civil War drama Cold Mountain (2003). He then portrayed an autistic piano player in Killer Diller and a high school quarterback in Friday Night Lights (2004).

Lucas Black's television career began with the CBS horror series American Gothic (1995-1996), where he played orphan Caleb Temple. He later appeared in a 1997 episode of Chicago Hope and starred in Disney's television films Flash (1997) and The Miracle Worker (2000). His most notable TV role was on CBS's NCIS: New Orleans as Special Agent Christopher LaSalle from 2014 until his departure in 2019.
