Born on May 12, 1955, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Kix began his education at Riverside Elementary and the Sewanee Military Academy. He later enrolled in Louisiana Tech University as a theatre arts major.
After working for his father on an oil pipeline in Alaska for one summer, Kix returned to Louisiana Tech and subsequently moved to Maine to write advertising for his sister and brother-in-law's company. Encouraged by his father to follow his passion for music, Kix relocated to Nashville in the early 1980s.
