REO Speedwagon in the 1970s and 80s

Cronin joined REO Speedwagon shortly after their self-titled debut album in 1971, replacing Terry Luttrell as the lead vocalist. He recorded with the band for their second album, 'R.E.O./T.W.O.' in 1972. Despite leaving the group in 1973 due to conflicts, he returned in 1976 for the sixth studio album, 'R.E.O.' and the live album 'Live: You Get What You Play For' in 1977. In 1978, they released 'You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish,' which peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200, featuring successful singles like 'Time for Me to Fly' and 'Roll with the Changes'. Their 1979 album 'Nine Lives' reached number 33 on the Billboard 200.

REO Speedwagon achieved peak success in the 1980s with the album 'Hi Infidelity,' which topped the Billboard 200 and produced hits like 'Keep On Loving You' and 'Take it on the Run.' This album spent 65 weeks on the Billboard charts and was the best-selling album of 1981. Following this, the band released 'Good Trouble' in 1982, reaching number seven on the Billboard 200 with hits like 'Keep the Fire Burnin'' and 'Sweet Time.' The 1984 album 'Wheels Are Turnin'' featured the number-one hit 'Can't Fight This Feeling.' Their subsequent albums included 'Life as We Know It' in 1987 and the 1988 compilation 'The Hits.'

Further Career with REO Speedwagon

By the late 1980s, REO Speedwagon experienced a decline in popularity. Their 13th studio album, 'The Earth, a Small Man, His Dog and a Chicken' in 1990, produced their last Billboard Hot 100 single, 'Love is a Rock.' The band released their next album, 'Building the Bridge' in 1996, which did not perform well commercially. Despite this, the band saw a resurgence in the late 90s and early 00s through tours, live albums, and compilations. In 2007, they released 'Find Your Own Way Home,' featuring singles like 'I Needed to Fall'. REO Speedwagon continued touring and appeared on Netflix's 'Ozark' in 2020, performing 'Time for Me to Fly.'
