Boeheim became the head basketball coach at Syracuse in 1976 after Roy Danforth's departure. Under Boeheim's guidance, the Orange have consistently reached the postseason. His tenure includes ten Big East Conference championships, five Big East Tournament championships, and 33 NCAA Tournament appearances, including five Final Four appearances and three national title championship games. In 2003, he led Syracuse to its first national title against Kansas.
Boeheim's accolades include four Big East Coach of the Year awards and ten District II Coach of the Year honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He also received Syracuse University's Arents Award, the highest honor for an alumnus.

Boeheim was found to have failed in promoting NCAA compliance for nearly a decade.
The investigation led to Boeheim's suspension for nine games of the 2015-16 ACC conference, the loss of eight scholarships, and vacating 101 wins from 2004 to 2012, which included ten NCAA Tournament games.
United States National Team Coach
Boeheim has also made a significant impact on international basketball. He was an assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski at multiple FIBA World Championships, winning gold in 2010 and 2014.
