Early Life

James Talmadge Brown was born on February 25, 1951, in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Harvard University, earning All-Ivy League honors in basketball and a degree in American Government. He captained the senior basketball team and was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1973 NBA Draft. Despite a promising start, Brown did not make the Hawks' roster and went on to work for Xerox and Eastman Kodak before joining the sports broadcasting field.

Broadcasting Career

James Brown began his broadcasting career in 1984, covering the NBA's Washington Bullets. He worked as an anchor for WDVM-TV in Washington and did freelance work with CBS Sports. Joining CBS in 1987, Brown was involved in NFL and college basketball play-by-play announcing, as well as coverage for the NBA Finals and the Winter Olympics in 1992 and 1994. In 1994, he became the host of the NFL on Fox's pregame show and the lead studio host for "FOX NHL Sunday" through 1998. Post the 2005 NFL season, Brown rejoined CBS Sports and currently serves as the host for "The NFL Today" and a substitute anchor on the "CBS Evening News".

Other Appearances

James Brown hosted "The World's Funniest!" and the "Coast to Coast" radio show, previously hosted by Bob Costas. He also served as a correspondent for "Real Sports" with Bryant Gumbel and had a cameo in the TV show "Married… with Children". Brown hosted a radio sports talk show on Sporting News Radio and appeared on "60 Minutes". Notably, he interviewed NFL quarterback Michael Vick and reported on Brian Banks' exoneration.

Brown has also contributed to "CBS This Morning" and "CBS Sunday Morning" and has filled in for anchors such as Scott Pelley, Jeff Glor, and Norah O'Donnell.

Personal Life

James Brown is married to Dorothy, and they have a daughter named Katrina. They are grandparents to three granddaughters and one grandson. Brown is a minority owner of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team, having joined a group led by D.C. real estate developer Ted Lerner. Additionally, in March 2009, he was named the Community Ambassador for AARP.
