Early Life

India Arie was born on October 3, 1975, in Denver, Colorado, to Joyce and Ralph Simpson. Encouraged by her musically talented family, Arie embraced her artistic skills from a young age. Her mother, once a singer signed to Motown, opened for icons like Stevie Wonder and Al Green. Arie grew up with her brother J'On and sister Mary. After her parents' divorce, she moved with her mother to Atlanta, Georgia, where she further honed her musical abilities. She attended the Savannah College of Art and Design, diving deeper into her passion for guitar, singing, and songwriting.
