Early Life

Fred Couples, born Frederick Steven Couples on October 3, 1959, in Seattle, Washington, grew up in a working-class home with two siblings. His family's Italian surname was originally Coppola, but his grandparents changed it to fit into American society. Fred honed his golf skills at Seattle's Jefferson Park golf course, emphasizing his self-taught approach throughout his career. His prowess earned him a golf scholarship to the University of Houston, where he met future PGA Tour player Blaine McCallister. At 19, Fred won the Washington Open, defeating PGA Tour veteran Don Bies.

Career

After turning pro, Fred Couples won his first PGA Tour event at the Kemper Open in 1983, followed by 14 more PGA Tour titles, including the prestigious 1992 Masters Tournament. His success led to him being named PGA Tour Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992, along with receiving the Vardon Trophy and joining the United States Ryder Cup team five times. In 1992, he achieved the number-one ranking in the Official World Golf Rankings, holding the position for 16 consecutive weeks.

Fred earned the nickname "Mr. Skins" for his success in the Skins Game, winning the event five times and accumulating over $3.5 million in net winnings. Despite facing back injuries starting in 1994, he continued to deliver strong performances, particularly on the World Tour and Champions Tour. In 2010, he made his debut on the Champions Tour, winning several events before withdrawing from the Masters Tournament in 2016 due to back problems.

In 1992, Fred expanded his career by designing golf courses, co-founding Couples Bates Golf Design (later Bates Golf Design Group) with Gene D. Gates. Together, they have designed over 20 award-winning courses worldwide.
