Frank Lee Beard was born on June 11, 1949, in Frankston, Texas. His parents were Rachel Elizabeth Dossett and John Woodrow Beard. He attended Irving High School.

Career

In 1969, Beard and future ZZ Top bandmate Dusty Hill toured as a Texas-based version of the British group the Zombies. They were also part of The Outlaws. Frank joined Billy Gibbons' band The Moving Sidewalks in May 1969 and introduced Gibbons to Hill. ZZ Top released "ZZ Top's First Album" in 1971, "Rio Grande Mud" in 1972, and "Tres Hombres" in 1973. After facing drug addiction, Beard took a break, but the band achieved great success with albums like "Degüello" (1979), "Eliminator" (1983), and "Afterburner" (1985). They continued to release albums and perform, including a notable Super Bowl XXXI halftime show performance in 1997. Despite the passing of Dusty Hill in July 2021, ZZ Top continues to perform with Elwood Francis replacing Hill.

Personal Life

Frank married Catherine Alexander in 1978, but they divorced in 1981. He then married Debbie Meredith in 1982, and they have three children. During a 2002 tour in Paris, Frank underwent an emergency appendectomy, marking the first time in 33 years that ZZ Top performed without one of its core members. He resides in Richmond, Texas, where he owns the TOP 40 Ranch. In 2013, Beard, initially known as the only beardless member of ZZ Top, grew a beard. He is also a scratch golfer and participates in tournaments.
