Born on October 3, 1952, in Paterson, New Jersey, Bruce Arians played college football at Virginia Tech, where he served as the starting quarterback during his senior year. Immediately after college, he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech from 1975 to 1977.

Early Coaching Career (1978-1995)

From 1978 to 1980, Arians coached the running backs and wide receivers at Mississippi State. He then served as the running backs coach at Alabama from 1981 to 1982. Arians secured his first head coaching job at Temple University, where he coached from 1983 to 1988.

In 1989, he made his NFL debut as a running backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, a position he held until 1992. He returned to college football as an offensive coordinator at Mississippi State from 1993 to 1995.

Progression in the NFL (1996-2011)

Arians re-entered the NFL in 1996 as the tight ends coach for the New Orleans Saints. He later served as the offensive coordinator at Alabama in 1997 before becoming the quarterbacks coach for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 to 2000. His role expanded as offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 2001 to 2003.
