He later moved to the Washington, D.C. area, attending Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Maryland, where he played baseball, basketball, and football. As Gene Michael became General Manager in 1990, Cashman was promoted to Assistant Farm Director and later Major League Administrator. By 1992, he had risen to the position of Assistant General Manager.

Cashman was named Senior Vice-President and General Manager in February 1998, replacing Bob Watson. In his tenure, he played a crucial role in securing long-term contracts for players such as CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Mark Teixeira, who were instrumental in the Yankees' 2009 World Series victory.

Over the years, Cashman secured several contract extensions, including a three-year deal in 2008 and a five-year contract in 2017 that brought his earnings to over $25 million. Under his management, the Yankees have won the World Series outright in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009.
