Early Life

Benjamin Géza Affleck-Boldt was born on August 15, 1972, in Berkeley, California, to parents Chris and Tim Affleck. His mother was a schoolteacher, and his father was an aspiring playwright who worked various jobs. The family moved to Falmouth, Massachusetts, when he was three years old, where his younger brother, Casey Affleck, was born. The family eventually settled in Cambridge, where his parents later divorced.

Affleck's family was involved in the arts, and Ben and his brother attended theater performances from a young age. His mother encouraged his acting but preferred he pursue a teaching career. At age eight, Ben met Matt Damon. They bonded over their shared love of acting and took classes together.

Early Career

Affleck's first professional acting gig was a local independent film at age seven. Between ages 8-15, he starred in "Voyage of the Mimi" and its sequel. He then appeared in ABC's "Wanted: A Perfect Man" and the television movie "Hands of a Stranger." After graduating in 1990, he took small roles in movies like "Daddy" (1991), "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992), and "School Ties" (1992).

His large size often got him cast as bullies or jocks, including notable roles in "Against the Grain," "Body to Die For: The Aaron Henry Story," and Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused."

"Good Will Hunting"

"Good Will Hunting" was the film that really launched Affleck's career. He co-wrote and acted in it alongside Matt Damon. Initially, the script began as a 40-page assignment for Damon's playwriting class. After developing it into a screenplay, they shopped it to several studios. Although Castle Rock accepted it, the duo moved to Miramax for greater creative control.

The film was released in 1997 to critical acclaim, earning Ben and Matt overnight stardom and better roles in subsequent projects.
