Early Life

Barbara Ann Corcoran was born on March 10, 1949, in Edgewater, New Jersey. She grew up in an Irish-Catholic family with nine siblings and has dyslexia. Despite her challenges, Barbara earned a degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1971 and spent a year teaching before moving into real estate, after holding 22 different jobs.

Career

At age 23, Corcoran started as a receptionist at the Giffuni Brothers real estate firm. With a $1,000 loan from her then-boyfriend, Ray Simone, she co-founded Corcoran-Simone in 1973. After their split, she rebranded the firm as The Corcoran Group, which thrived until she sold it for $66 million in 2001.

In the mid-1970s, Barbara started publishing The Corcoran Report, a real estate newsletter. She is the author of three books: "If You Don't Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons On Your Pigtails: And Other Lessons I Learned From My Mom" (2003), "Nextville: Amazing Places to Live Your Life" (2008), and "Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business" (2011). She joined the Shark Tank panel in 2009 with Kevin O'Leary, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec, and Kevin Harrington. The show has earned four Emmys and four Critics Choice Television Awards. In 2017, Barbara participated in season 25 of Dancing with the Stars but was the first to be eliminated. She has made guest appearances on shows like "Drop Dead Diva" (2013) and "Grace and Frankie" (2020).

Personal Life

In 1988, Barbara married retired Navy captain and former FBI agent Bill Higgins. The couple welcomed their son, Tom, in 1994 through in vitro fertilization using an egg from Barbara's sister, Florence. They adopted their daughter, Kate, in 2005. Barbara has dyslexia and enjoys skiing and beach outings.
